SC. School Fight Led to Arrest Police and Tasers

Winnsboro, SC (WLTX) – A fight at Fairfield-Central High School has led to at least 20 arrests at the school, police confirm.

The incident took place around 11:30 a.m. in the cafeteria.

Winnsboro Department of Public Safety Chief F.J. Lorick says the fight started between girls who were upset over a boy. The scuffle then quickly escalated.

“This was over ongoing relationships between boys and girls. It’s sad but most of the students agreed that this is over foolishness,” Lorick said.

In all, at least 20 students were arrested, although that number could be higher.

About 20 police officers and Fairfield Sheriff’s deputies responded.

Lorick says some of the students were tasered as officers attempted to get the situation under control. Two of the students were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

“When you have a large crowd and you’re trying to get order and we ask you to do something and you tesist, were gonna do what we need to do to get order,” Lorick added.

All of the students who were arrested were charged with disorderly conduct. Those who are juveniles will be released to their parents. The ones older than 17 will stay in jail until they go before a judge.

“I’m sure none of these officers went over and just started tazing people but it’s cameras over there and were gonna review all that,” Lorick said.

Disorderly conduct is a misdemeanor.

Fairfield County School Board Chair Annie McDaniel issued the following statement:

“We are well aware of this afternoon’s situation and we want to stress to the public that the safety of our students is first and foremost.  The incident is being investigated and the appropriate action will be taken once the investigation is complete.   Even though we regret the incident occurred, we are relieved that no weapons were involved, and we appreciate the quick response of law enforcement.  We do not take these types of situations lightly but the overall student population of Fairfield Central High School is composed of wonderful students and this is not representative of our student body or our district.  We will continue to evaluate situations like this one in an effort to improve safety for our students.
