IA. Hillcrest Employee Recovering From Attack and Attempted Murder

A Dubuque social worker is in fair condition tonight after a teen at Hillcrest Family Services attacked him.

Police say that teen tried to kill the worker. 17-year-old Jesse Shimon faces attempted murder charges.

Investigators say he ran away from the treatment facility, broke into a car repair shop, stole a car and a shotgun and returned to Hillcrest.

That’s where he attempted to shoot 58-year-old Robert Mollman.

Hillcrest Executive Director Gary Gansemer says the staff here deals with minor assaults from time to time. Gansemer says the kids who live here have serious mental and behavior issues.

After running away from Hillcrest, Police say Shimon walked to University Auto. He broke through that window and stole a knife and a gun, which owners say was a wall decoration.

University Auto Owner, Bill Haggerty said, “It was an old wall hanger that I had in here. It’s a double barrel antique shot gun.”

Bill Haggerty said the gun wasn’t loaded. He didn’t know if it even worked. But he says he’d like to see more security at Hillcrest.
