VA. Two students in custody after fights at Norview High School

Two Norview High School students were taken into custody by Norfolk Police on Friday after several fights broke out at the school during a fire alarm.

Several students became involved in a fight outside after nearly 200 students refused to go back into the school after the fire alarm had ended. A school security guard attempted to break up the fight and was subsequently assaulted by several students in the group, police say.

Norfolk Police officers on scene to assist with the fire alarm came to assist the security guard.

A 16-year-old female student involved in the assault on the security guard resisted arrest and was tased by police. She was taken into custody, treated for minor injuries, and has been charged with assault and battery, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.

The security guard received injuries to her face and body and declined medical treatment on scene.

Meanwhile, a second fight broke out at another location on school grounds around the same time. Officers responded and were able to control the situation.

As a result, a 16-year-old male student was taken into custody. Charges are pending against him for assault and battery, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.

Norfolk Public Schools has released a statement saying in part, “All school activities for this evening are canceled, and the football game scheduled for tonight between Norview and Granby high schools has been rescheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow, October 25, at ODU’s Powhatan Field. The safety of our students and staff is our top concern, and we appreciate your patience as we investigate, analyze what happened, and take appropriate action. We want to thank the vast majority of our Norview students who behaved well during this situation, and our staff members who worked expertly to ensure the safety and security of all concerned. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school on Monday. Norfolk Police will continue to work in close partnership with us next week for a secure and orderly environment.”
