OR. Beaverton boy rushed to hospital after being choked at school

Oregon’s intervention and supervision policies in school’s lacking as students.

A middle school boy was rushed to the hospital after playing a dangerous game known by some as the “choking game.”

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon at Whitford Middle School, during school hours and under the supervision of at least one teacher, according to the Beaverton School District.

The district wouldn’t comment on the details of what happened, other than to say two boys were involved.

“This is just crazy to me that this is all happening on school grounds, and in a classroom,” said the boy’s mother, Erica. She asked FOX 12 not to use her last name to protect her son’s identity.

“My son was in the middle of PE class, and this other boy just walked up to him and started choking him from behind,” said Erica.

“My son didn’t really even get a chance to say, ‘Yeah, I want to play that game. Let’s try it.’ The kid was just like, ‘Tap me, tap me when you’re going to pass out.’ But, the next thing my son knows is that he’s trying to tap the kid and the kid isn’t responding, or he just didn’t figure it out.”

Doctors across the country say there are many risks to playing the choking game. Some kids have even died.

Erica said her son was choked to the point of blacking out. He reportedly lost consciousness and fell to the ground, hitting his head hard.

“His right eye just looks down now. It can’t focus, it won’t come up and he needs eye surgery. He also bit through his lip when he hit his head,” she said.

Erica believes because of the eye surgery, her son likely won’t return to school until the beginning of next year.

Beaverton police are investigating what happened at the school.

It’s not known if the boy’s family plans to press any charges against the other teen.
