OH. School Chief enacts anti-bullying plan to stop rash of violent incidents

Responding to a recent rash of violent incidents involving children in Warren schools, Superintendent Bruce Thomas has assigned a staff member to implement an anti-bullying plan.

Kristen Lewis, coordinator of student counseling and family engagement, already has given one presentation at the Willard K-8 School — the scene of two incidents.

In late October, an 11-year-old boy reported being kicked on the side of the face and swung around in the gym locker room at Willard, fracturing a toe.

The four boys accused in the incident — two in sixth grade and two in eighth grade — have been charged with assault in Trumbull County Juvenile Court.

A staff member was reprimanded in connection with the incident, said Aaron Schwab, spokesman for the school district.

An 8-year-old girl also reported being punched in the face and head by an 8-year-old girl and kicked by an 8-year-old boy at Willard on Nov. 9.

Both victims said the incidents were part of a pattern of bullying.

Lewis has an extensive background and training in bullying problems and violence, Thomas said.

The campaign will involve training for students, teachers, administrators and community members, Schwab said.
