NZ. Boys dies after school fight

A Robertson high school pupil died in hospital a day after he allegedly had a fight with another pupil at the school.

Police have opened a murder case and may arrest the other pupil.

Kieron Fortuin, 15, a Grade 9 pupil at Langeberg Secondary School, died in hospital four days ago.

Yesterday police spokesman November Filander said Fortuin was injured on Wednesday when he was involved in a fight with another pupil on the school grounds.

Filander, who struggled to get hold of the investigating officer yesterday, was unable to say where the fight occurred or whether it was during or after school hours.

He said after the alleged fight, Fortuin and the other pupil were taken to the principal, then both were sent home with notes telling their parents to be at the school the next day.

Fortuin had gone home.

Filander said, according to his mother, when she arrived home she found her son sitting in the living room.

“She… noticed that he seemed dizzy and thought that he was under the influence of alcohol. After a while she took him outside to sit on the stoep, but he still seemed wobbly and at one stage he even fell from the stoep,” Filander said.

The mother took her son to Robertson Hospital, but he died the next day.

Filander said hospital staff called the police to report that Fortuin had had neck and face injuries and had died early the next morning.

Filander said a post-mortem had been performed on Fortuin’s body in Worcester three days ago to determine what caused his death, but the results were not yet available.

It was not clear yesterday what the two boys had been fighting about, and further details were expected to be available today.

Officers have been taking statements from various people including doctors who treated him.
