Two teenage boys were suspended from River Road Middle School for engaging in a fist fight in which one of the two suffered a broken left arm, Pasquotank County Sheriff Randy Cartwright said.

The fight happened the morning of May 19 in the seventh-grade boys restroom after an argument in the gymnasium stemming from a prior disagreement, Cartwright said.

“One of the boys picked up the other one and threw him down on a metal trash can that was turned over, which caused a laceration and broke two bones in his arm,” Cartwright said.

The trash can, which was knocked over in the fight, has sharp edges, Cartwright said.

“And the fight stopped at that time,” Cartwright said.

The injured boy, 13, was taken to Albemarle Hospital before later being taken to The Children of The King’s Daughters hospital in Norfolk, Va., Cartwright said.

Cartwright said his department has petitioned North Carolina juvenile authorities to charge the 13-year-old with misdemeanor affray and to charge the other boy, who is 15, with misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury.

Pasquotank County Schools spokeswoman Angela Noblitt could not be reached for comment, but Cartwright his department was told that the 15-year-old received a 10-day suspension and that the 13-year-old received a three-day suspension.

Cartwright said the call came in at 8:22 a.m.

When asked to provide more details about what caused the dispute, Cartwright said, “Well, we know what we were told.”

Cartwright declined to be more specific because he said it is hearsay, but he said the dispute happened at the home of one of the boys.

Aside from the incident at River Road Middle, Cartwright said the school year in Pasquotank County has been pretty quiet in terms of assaults resulting in serious injuries.

“I mean, you’re going to have a few school fights here and there,” he said.

The people commenting in response to this article seem to have a different impression regarding the number of school fights.  Comments
