NC. School bus fight caught on tape. Bus driver does nothing

Video posted on the Facebook web site shows two teen girls fighting on a school bus soon after it left Rosewood High School Monday, and now some parents say the driver should have done more to stop it.

Parents contacted ABC11 soon after the video was posted. In the tape, the students slap and punch each other. It lasted several minutes and neither the bus driver or other students make any move to stop it.

While the images are disturbing, Wayne County school officials point out the driver’s first responsibility was handling the moving bus.

“In a situation like this, it comes down to a judgment call. And in this case, she felt like she had to protect the safety of the other 23 students. She was on a roadway. Cars were coming and going, and she had to make sure she could get to a safe location where she could pull the bus over and help put a stop to the fight,” explained Ken Derksen with Wayne County Public Schools.

The bus was about a mile from the school when the fight between the two freshmen started. The driver returned to the school and handed the teens over to a school resource officer.

No other students were injured.

Rosewood’s principal told ABC11 Wednesday the two girls have been suspended.

Ironically, the students who recorded the fight on cell phones may also be in hot water. School officials say school policy prohibits students from recording on school grounds, and that includes buses.
