IN. Student arrested at Leo HS for having a gun

The Allen County Sheriff’s Department arrested a Leo High School student Tuesday after finding the boy with a handgun in his vehicle in the school’s parking lot.

Sheriff Ken Fries said the 17-year-old boy’s father was concerned because his son was acting strange and the father found his Glock handgun missing.

The man then found his son sitting in his vehicle at the school parking lot, 14600 Amstutz Road, police said.

The father called the police about 11:30 a.m., and officers surrounded the boy’s vehicle in the parking lot, Fries said.

Officers found the gun in a backpack in the back seat of the vehicle, and the boy was arrested and taken to the Allen County Juvenile Justice Center on a felony charge of possession of a handgun on school property.

“Our officers did get there on time, and they probably saved this kid’s life,” Fries said. “The dad took the extra effort and called us, which obviously was a good thing to do.”

East Allen County Schools sent home a letter to Leo High School parents telling them about the incident, according to spokeswoman Tamyra Kelly. “The situation at Leo today had nothing to do with Leo High School,” she said. “It was a family matter and we are letting law enforcement handle it at this point.”
