CT.Increased Police Presence at Manchester School After Gang-Related Fight

There was a stepped-up police presence at Manchester High School this morning, 24 hours after a brawl involving dozens of students that led to 20 arrests.

Police Chief Marc Montminy confirmed Friday morning that a gang rivalry sparked the fight.

Police said they continue investigating what caused the fight.

“We will continue to have an increased presence at the school through dismissal to ensure the safety of students and staff,” said police spokesman Lt. Christopher Davis.

In a morning address to the student body, O’Donnell talked about school pride and reminded them about the importance of wearing ID badges and remaining vigilant.

“If they see something out of line, they need to report it,” he said.  The only injured person was a police officer.

The brawl on Thursday broke out between two groups of students in the hallway about 9 a.m., according to police. Male and female students were involved, police said.

No students were injured and no weapons were used, according to O’Donnell. But a police officer was treated at Manchester Memorial Hospital for a muscle injury and was released, police said.

The school was in lockdown for about a half-hour after the fight to ensure that all of the students involved had been located, O’Donnell said.
